On May 14, 2022, American Jewish Committee (AJC) sent the following letter to Mayor Brown of Buffalo in solidarity with the city of Buffalo, following the horrific shooting at the grocery store.

Dear Mayor Brown,

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we send this letter on behalf of us all at AJC (American Jewish Committee) Westchester/Fairfield. The breaking news of the horrific shooting attack at the grocery store in Buffalo is still so raw, and too many families have been senselessly torn apart as a result.

Based on the still-breaking news and police and FBI assessments, we at AJC understand that this is being treated and investigated as a hate crime.

AJC, or the American Jewish Committee, is the oldest Jewish civil rights organization in U.S. – founded in 1906. One of hallmarks of AJC’s work is our interfaith/intergroup partnerships. Since the first day of our founding, we have worked to combat hatred, racism, and antisemitism.

AJC focuses on countering antisemitism and all forms of hate by educating the public, educating governments and elected officials to act and organizing coalitions with other faith and ethnic groups. Our regional offices each have a Community of Conscience, under the umbrella of which we bring our interfaith and intergroup partners together – not just in times of crisis, though that is certainly important, but to work together when waters are calm, to stand strong and proud and with each other – with all members of our communities.

We must continue to fight back against racism, hatred, and violent extremism, and our hands are outstretched in partnership and friendship with the entire community.

We are horrified by this awful, senseless attack in Buffalo. An attack on one community is an attack on all our communities.

On behalf of AJC Westchester/Fairfield and our Community of Conscience, we stand in solidarity with you and the people of Buffalo. Please let us know how we can help.

In sorrow,

Mona Abramson

Regional President

Myra Clark-Siegel
